The boutique Hawke’s Bay Winery, Crossroads, has continued the success of its syrah with the announcement of another trophy, this time at the 2014 Decanter World Wine Awards held in London this week.

The Crossroads Winemakers Collection Syrah 2010 took home a gold medal and the Regional Trophy for the top New Zealand Red Rhone Varietal over £15.

The Decanter World Wine Awards is the world’s largest and most influential wine competition with a panel of 224 world-class judging experts who carefully tasted their way through more than 15,000 wines from 46 countries this year. The Crossroads Winemakers Collection Syrah 2010 was ranked in the top echelon of those wines, with only 1 per cengt of wines recognised with a trophy.

The judging panel described the wine as excellent, with a “rich and juicy palate” and “lashings of generous, spicy plum and dark berry fruit – supple-textured with appealing sweetness.”

The Decanter trophy comes just weeks after the same wine from the 2012 vintage was named as The Best NZ Red Wine at the International Wine Challenge, another prominent UK wine competition.

Crossroads Winemaker Miles Dinneen was thrilled to receive another trophy for their syrah.

“Our Elms Vineyard on the Gimblett Gravels has been producing outstanding syrah and it’s great to receive further recognition on the world stage.” says Mr Dinneen.

Steven Spurrier, chair of the Decanter World Wine Awards, says awarding a wine with a Decanter sticker tells consumers around the world that these wines have passed the ultimate test.
